Reading Volume Spikes After Earnings

Earnings weeks produce loud volume. Here is how to separate genuine participation from one-day noise.

A volume spike on the earnings print often tempts traders into chasing the first gap. Technical analysis does not ignore the news — it asks whether participation continues on the following sessions.

Compare the earnings-day volume to the twenty-session average. If day two and day three fall back below average while price stalls at a prior resistance band, the spike was likely event noise rather than a fresh trend impulse.

In the Volume & Momentum Lab we annotate three post-earnings examples from the prior reporting season. The recurring lesson: wait for a second close outside the earnings range before treating the move as structure change.

Keep a simple table: ticker, earnings date, volume multiple, and whether price held the break after three sessions. Patterns appear faster than intuition alone.
